30 Graves Damaged at Jewish Cemetery in South Africa

More than 30 headstones were damaged and knocked over at the Oudtshoorn Jewish cemetery in South Africa, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency reported. Oudtshoorn is a town situated about 200 miles east of Cape Town. 

According to Bernard Herman, the head of the local Jewish burial society, this sort of vandalism is the first significant anti-Semitic incident of its kind in their community. In an article published on the website of the South African Jewish Board of Deputies, Berman said, “We intend to restore all the affected headstones.”

Repairs to the affected graves will come at the cost of the Cape Town Jewish community, which has been declining in numbers over the last several years and does not have a regular source of income for maintaining the cemetery, according to Berman. “We are fighting a losing battle in our small and shrinking Jewish community,” he said.
