Members of the Combat Antisemitism Movement’s Jewish Mayors and Municipal Leaders Association (JMMLA) issued the following joint statement for Juneteenth:
We, Jewish mayors and municipal leaders from communities across the United States, recognize Juneteenth as a celebration of freedom and a reminder of America’s ongoing commitment to liberty, equality, and human dignity.
As Jews, we understand that freedom cannot be taken for granted. Our history has taught us the importance of standing against hatred, discrimination, and exclusion wherever they exist. That understanding helped forge a strong partnership between Jewish and Black Americans throughout the civil rights movement. We remember Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel marching together in Selma, united by the belief that faith must inspire action and that every person is created with equal worth.
Juneteenth is not only a reflection on the past. It is also a celebration of courage, resilience, and the American promise that freedom belongs to all. It reminds us that strong communities are built when people from different backgrounds come together in pursuit of a shared future.
As Jewish mayors and municipal leaders, we are proud to honor this day and reaffirm our commitment to building communities where every person has the opportunity to contribute, succeed, and be treated with equal worth.
Happy Juneteenth.
