New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani renewed his call on Monday for enforcement of the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is set to visit the city and address the United Nations General Assembly later this week.
In a CNN interview, Mamdani called Netanyahu “a war criminal and an architect of a horrific genocide of the Palestinian people.”
Mamdani’s genocide charge is a modern permutation of the ancient blood libel, the centuries-old smear that portrayed Jews as murderers and fueled violence against them. Today, that same accusation is directed at the Jewish state as it defends itself against Hamas, the terrorist organization responsible for the October 7th massacre.
The New York City mayor acknowledged that municipal authorities lacked the legal powers to execute the warrant. He reached that conclusion in July after his administration reviewed the city’s options, while insisting Netanyahu remained “not welcome” in New York.
“I do believe that that is something that should be honored,” Mamdani said, “because what we want to see, and we’ve been talking about this today, is a faith in our politics, a faith in accountability.”
“If the International Criminal Court deems someone worthy of an arrest because of a violation of those laws, then who are we to say that anyone should be above that?” he added. “And I think very clearly that everyone should be held accountable to it.”
In a video message published on Tuesday, Netanyahu accused Mamdani of “inciting riots against New York Jews” and “supporting the Hamas terrorist monsters who butchered our people.”
“Shame on you, Mr. Mamdani!” Netanyahu declared.
“I am coming to the UN. I’m going to tell the truth about our heroic soldiers… and I’m going to tell the truth about you.”
