Anti-Israel Protest Targets London Jewish Neighborhood Days After Antisemitic Attack

An anti-Israel demonstration moved through Hendon in northwest London on Monday, with protesters shouting “genocide” and declaring that “the State of Israel has to go” outside Jewish sites.

Around 40 protesters took part in the march, passing a kosher restaurant in a neighborhood with a large Jewish population. The protest was reportedly tied to Palestinian “Land Day” and also focused on the UK headquarters of the Jewish National Fund (JNF).

The march came less than two weeks after an antisemitic arson attack on Jewish ambulances in the same area.

The chant of “genocide” turns a term coined in the aftermath of the Holocaust to describe the systematic destruction of the Jewish people into a weapon against the Jewish state, inverting both its meaning and its historical origin.

Barnet Labour Councillor Sara Conway described the demonstration as “deeply concerning and unacceptable.” She warned that “protesters brought intimidation to the streets of Barnet at a time when the Jewish community is feeling so vulnerable.” She added that the protest had not been pre-registered. However, police responded within minutes of being alerted.

Hendon MP David Pinto-Duschinsky condemned the demonstration as “utterly appalling, completely unacceptable, and clearly antisemitic.” He stressed that it took place in a residential area still reeling from a recent attack. He added that he was working closely with law enforcement and the Community Security Trust.

The National Jewish Assembly said the demonstration served only to inflame tensions and intimidate residents, adding, “This is not a protest; it is harassment.”
