Protesters subjected Brad Lander, the Jewish Democratic candidate for New York’s 10th Congressional District, to antisemitic abuse outside Madison Square Garden on Saturday.
“You look like a scrotum, you filthy ballsack!” one heckler shouted. “F*** you, ballsack Zionist!”
Others branded Lander “another paid Zionist” and ordered him to “get out of here.”
The protest targeted an event organized by the Hindu nationalist RSS movement inside the arena. Although Lander had come to join their demonstration, some protesters declared him unwelcome solely because he still identified as a Zionist.
Their hostility came despite Lander’s fierce criticism of Israel over the past year. A leading Jewish critic of Israel within the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, he has falsely labeled the Gaza war a “genocide,” demanded an end to “American complicity,” and opposed further U.S. military aid to Israel. He nonetheless calls himself a “liberal Zionist,” supports the country’s existence as a Jewish and democratic state, and rejects efforts to boycott it.
“I am Brad Lander, the Democratic candidate for Congress in New York’s 10th District, and I came here today to join others and say no to RSS,” he told the crowd. He also condemned the venue for hosting what he called a “fascist and hateful rally,” comparing it to the pro-Nazi gathering held there in 1939.
