Antisemitic Crimes Remain New York City’s Largest Hate Crime Category for Third Consecutive Year, NYPD Data Shows

Anti-Jewish hate crimes accounted for the majority of New York City’s confirmed hate crimes during the first seven months of 2026, according to NYPD data released on Monday, even as the city recorded historic lows in murders and shootings.

Anti-Jewish incidents made up 56.9 percent of all confirmed hate crimes citywide during the January-July period, despite Jewish residents accounting for only roughly 10 percent of the population.

Anti-Jewish hate crimes far outnumbered every other bias motivation. The next-highest bias motivation, sexual orientation, recorded 34 confirmed incidents, compared with 205 targeting Jewish New Yorkers.

Confirmed hate crimes overall rose 9.4 percent, from 329 to 360. Confirmed anti-Jewish hate crimes rose from 189 to 205 over the same seven-month period last year, an 8.5 percent increase.

Anti-Jewish incidents also accounted for 57.4 percent of confirmed hate crimes during the same period in 2025. In the NYPD’s 2024 year-end data, which used the department’s earlier reporting methodology, anti-Jewish incidents accounted for 54 percent of all reported hate crimes.

In July alone, confirmed anti-Jewish hate crimes climbed from 15 to 23, a 53.3 percent jump.

Every flagged incident goes through the NYPD’s Hate Crime Task Force, which investigates in consultation with the department’s Legal Bureau before classifying a case as confirmed. The NYPD briefly reported only confirmed hate crime figures starting in February 2026, then began publishing confirmed and reported figures together the following month, after its January data showed a 182 percent year-over-year increase in anti-Jewish incidents.

Those reported numbers show the same pattern. Of the 50 hate crimes reported in July, 29 targeted Jewish New Yorkers, more than every other bias motivation combined.
