Antisemitic incidents accounted for the majority of hate crimes in New York City in the first three months of 2026, even as overall major crime declined, according to new data released by the NYPD on Thursday.
Police recorded 78 antisemitic cases out of 143 confirmed hate crimes, representing 55% of all incidents. Hate crimes rose by 11.7% during the same period.
NYPD Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch presented the figures while announcing a change in how the department reported hate crime data. The NYPD will now distinguish between incidents that are reported and those formally confirmed following investigation.
Under the new system, the department’s Hate Crimes Task Force and legal bureau review potential cases before classifying them under New York State law.
In March, authorities logged 42 reported antisemitic incidents, of which 32 were confirmed. While that marks a slight decrease compared to the same month last year, antisemitic incidents still made up the majority of confirmed cases.
The data was released alongside broader crime statistics showing a 5.3% decline in major crime. Despite that drop, antisemitic incidents continued to account for the largest share of hate crimes in New York City.
