Ahead of Yom HaShoah, Israel’s Holocaust Remembrance Day, antisemitic graffiti was spray-painted over the weekend on the largest synagogue in Barcelona, Spain.
“Free Palestine from the river to the sea. Solidarity with the Palestinian people,” the unidentified vandals wrote Catalan on the walls of the historic Maimonides Synagogue.
Leaflets were also left nearby that called Israel “a murderous country that steals land and destroys innocents’ homes,” and accused it of perpetrating “genocide against the Palestinian people and apartheid.”
Barcelona Mayor Ada Colau used similar rhetoric earlier this year when she announced that her city as severing its “twinning” agreement with Tel Aviv.
Colau — a member of the left-wing Barcelona en Comú who has been mayor since 2015 — also slandered Israel with the “apartheid” charge, claiming it had committed “repeated violations of the human rights of the Palestinian population” and was “incompliant” with United Nations resolutions.
