The Atlanta Falcons shared a red, white, and black striped version of their bird emblem on Instagram and X on Wednesday, inviting parallels with a German military banner from World War II.
Labeled “New PFP,” the Reichskriegsflagge-like artwork drew a wave of tasteless jokes. The abbreviation is shorthand for “new profile picture.”

When asked about the image on Thursday, a Falcons spokesperson clarified that the team had not introduced a “new logo,” but offered no additional remarks.
The design appeared intended to honor the Falcons’ 1966 expansion team. The club was set to wear throwback uniforms for Sunday’s home game against the San Francisco 49ers.
Sports logo historian Chris Creamer told NBC News on Thursday that he believed the image was an innocent attempt to coordinate the team’s social media appearance with its throwback uniforms. He added that he would not have recognized the resemblance himself before the image was published.
Nevertheless, Creamer criticized the decision to leave the image online as the backlash intensified. “At this point it just sort of seems kind of stubborn to keep it up,” he said.
The Falcons subsequently replaced the profile picture with an image of their throwback helmet.
