Belgian Justice Minister Paul Van Tigchelt confirmed on Tuesday that the Hamas terrorist organization is operating in Belgium, using shell companies to engage in fundraising and political lobbying activities.
Van Tigchelt’s comments came in response to a query from Belgium MP Michael Freilich, a member of the New Flemish Alliance Party.
The justice minister named the Brussels-based European Palestinian Council for Political Relations (EUPAC), led by Hamas-tied Palestinian activist Majed Al-Zeer, as one of the proxy groups Belgian authorities were monitoring.
EUPAC’s self-stated aims are to “work to invest in the importance of the geo-strategic position of the Middle East region: as part of the Palestinian “struggle towards liberation from occupation.”
In response to Van Tigchelt’s revelation, Freilich said, “This must be a wake-up call for Belgium. It’s a very small step between fundraising for Hamas and promoting terror attacks. There was a similar attempt in Denmark that was thwarted. The Jewish community in the country and in Europe is at an active risk.”
“It is not possible that organizations linked to Hamas, a group on the list of terrorist organizations, can continue their activities in Belgium,” he noted. “How can we let such a thing happen without intervening? Their funds should have been frozen and these people should have been arrested long ago. The fact that nothing is being done really concerns me.”
