The CAM en Español team was honored to participate in several prominent Hanukkah celebrations organized by its partners in Uruguay this week.
In the capital Montevideo last Thursday, Chabad of Uruguay held its annual menorah-lighting ceremony in Trouville Square, marking the second night of Hanukkah. The event also featured a special prayer for the release of the hostages still held by Hamas in Gaza and the welfare of the IDF soldiers fighting for the security of the State of Israel and the Jewish people across the globe.
Two days later, on the fourth night of Hanukkah, CAM en Español joined a havdalah service and menorah-lighting ceremony in Punta del Este, hosted by the Jewish Community of Punta del Este (CIPEMU) and the New Israeli Congregation of Montevideo (NCI).
More than 300 people attended the gathering, which was held under the banner of “We Will Not Truly Celebrate Until All the Hostages Are Returned.”
On Monday, the sixth night of Hanukkah, CAM en Español was present at a menorah-lighting ceremony for children put on by the Yavne organization.
“Since the beginning of CAM en Español’s activities almost four years ago, cooperation in every country has been strengthened thanks to the wonderful work carried out by CAM’s partners,” CAM Director of Hispanic Affairs Shay Salamon, who is based in Uruguay, said. “On this holiday, we must shine together the light of truth and our common values and vision for a just, pluralistic, and hate-free society.”
CAM en Español’s outreach in Latin America began in 2021, and since then it has worked diligently to build meaningful partnerships and friendships with influential leaders, lawmakers, diplomats, community organizations, and civil society activists from a diverse assortment of religious, political and cultural backgrounds in the region to combat antisemitism together.
During this time, CAM en Español has emerged as a key player in the battle against Jew-hatred in Latin America, with a growing coalition involved in impactful activities in countries including Uruguay, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Panama, and Guatemala, among others.
CAM en Español has organized regional summits hosted by Costa Rica in 2024, Uruguay in 2023, Panama in 2022, and Guatemala in 2021.
