A forum titled “Back to School! Same for Antisemitism?” was co-organized in Brussels, Belgium, on Wednesday by the Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM), European Jewish Congress (EJC), B’nai B’rith International, and European Parliament’s Working Group Against Antisemitism.

The high-level event, hosted by MEPs Sabrina Repp and Nathalie Loiseau, focused on addressing antisemitism at European universities. The discussion highlighted the alarming post-October 7th massacre surge of antisemitic incidents on European campuses, which has profoundly affected Jewish students and academics, undermining their sense of safety, belonging, and freedom of expression over the past two years.

CAM was represented by Director of European Affairs Shannon Seban, who gave opening remarks.

“October 7 marked a turning point in the hatred directed at Jews, but we cannot accept that students walk onto campuses filled with fear and anxiety,” Seban said. “There is no inevitability in this trend — it demands courage, vigilance, and responsibility. University leaders and society as a whole must ensure that nothing is overlooked, nothing tolerated, when it comes to antisemitism. Our campuses must be places of learning and safety, not arenas of hate.”

Other speakers at Wednesday’s conference included: B’nai B’rith International Director of European Union Affairs Alina Bricman; Professor Cary Nelson; Professor Joel Kotek; President of French Union of Jewish Students Yossef Murciano; European Jewish Congress Director of European Affairs Ariella Woitchik; Chair of the Working Group Against Antisemitism MEP Alice Teodorescu Måwe; and European Commission Coordinator on Combating Antisemitism and Fostering Jewish Life Katharina von Schnurbein.
