Demonstrators set fire to Israeli and American flags in the French city of Lyon on Saturday.

Onlookers cheered, while some chanted “Israel the murderer.”

Footage shows applause greeting the burning of the U.S. flag. The Israeli flag then drew a louder reaction, mixing cheers with boos, when it was displayed before being set ablaze.

The video also captures a person trampling an Israeli flag spread across a tram stop’s transparent roof.

The incident followed attacks on a synagogue and Jewish shops in Marseille the previous week. Palestinian flags and keffiyehs had featured repeatedly during earlier weekends of unrest involving vandalism and looting.

The nationwide rallies began with high school students protesting teacher shortages and neglected school buildings. Unions and others dissatisfied with President Emmanuel Macron’s leadership later joined with additional demands.

Gatherings in Paris and other cities ended in tear gas and scattered fires set by small groups. The government estimated nationwide turnout at 320,000 on the third consecutive weekend of rallies. Authorities reported more than 560 arrests by Saturday night.
