Database of Antisemitic Incidents Worldwide Since Outbreak of Israel-Gaza Violence

Since May 9th, when Hamas fired a barrage of rockets at Jerusalem, sparking a major escalation of violence in Israel and the Gaza Strip, Jewish communities worldwide have faced a relentless wave of antisemitism from pro-Palestinian supporters.

These incidents have included physical assault, verbal harassment, vandalism, hate speech, and anti-Israel rhetoric that violated the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) working definition of antisemitism, among other transgressions.

The following is a list of antisemitic events that have occurred since May 9. It will be updated as further developments warrant.

Lewiston, Maine, United States: Sunday, May 9 – Bates College was hit with anti-Israel graffiti and flyers that some saw as a potential hate crime. Read More.

Ann Arbor, Michigan, United States, Monday, May 10 – Jewish students were outraged after the University of Michigan student government accused Israel of ethnic cleansing and war crimes. Read More. 

New York City, United States, Tuesday, May 11 – A Jewish man was reportedly left bloodied and sought refuge in a New York City store Tuesday after attacked by pro-Palestinian demonstrators outside the Israeli consulate. Read More.

Boca Raton, Florida, Wednesday, May 12 – A van that had several Nazi slogans written on it as well as a Palestinian flag circled around a pro-Israel rally in Boca Raton, Florida. Read More.

Bonn and Muenster, Germany, Wednesday, May 12 – Germany’s Jewish community on Wednesday called for protection to be ramped up after Israeli flags were burnt in front of synagogues amid escalating violence between Israel and Palestinian terror groups in the Gaza Strip. Read More.

Ceuta, Spain, Wednesday, May 12 – The Federation of Jewish Communities in Spain (FCJE) strongly condemned “Free Palestine” graffiti found on the façade of the synagogue in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta in North Africa. Read More.

Oxford, England, Wednesday, May 12 – Jewish students have reacted angrily to a statement issued “in solidarity with Palestine” from student leaders at St Anne’s College Oxford, calling it “inexcusable.” Read More.

Los Angeles, California, United States, Wednesday, May 12 – Anti-Israel protesters were seen doing a Nazi salute on a main Los Angeles highway. Read More.

Norwich, England, Friday, May 14 – A synagogue in Norwich, UK, has been defaced with antisemitic graffiti that include a swastika and an ethnic slur for Jews. Read More.

Washington, DC, United States, Friday, May 14 – In an address to Congress, Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), her shoulders wrapped with a black-and-white Palestinian keffiyeh, claimed that Israel was an “apartheid state.” Read More.

Brussels, Belgium, Saturday, May 15 – Pro-Palestinian demonstrators in Brussels shouted anti-Jewish slogans and burned Israeli flags. Read More.

London, England, Saturday, May 15 – Jews were taunted and an Israeli flag was ripped apart at pro-Palestinian march in central London. Read More.

Bochum, Germany, Saturday, May 15 – Around 600 people met at the square in front of the Bochum city hall to demonstrate against Israel. They chanted “Child Murderer Israel,” “Where are you, armies of Muslims?” and, “Stop doing what Hitler did to you.” Read More.

Paris, France, Saturday, May 15 – Police in Paris fired tear gas and aimed water cannons at protesters defying a ban on marching against Israeli strikes in Gaza. Paris police said they made 44 arrests and that one officer was injured breaking up a gathering of demonstrators. Read More.

Berlin, Germany, Saturday, May 15 – The high point of the radicalized anti-Israel sentiment in Germany came in Berlin when a demonstration that began with 1,200 marchers tripled in size and descended into a full-scale street battle. Read More.

Madrid, Spain, Saturday, May 15 – Thousands joined a protest in Madrid in support of the Palestinians after six days of conflict with Israel. Read More.

Athens, Greece, Saturday, May 15 – Greek police fired tear gas and water cannon on Saturday to disperse pro-Palestinian demonstrators protesting in Athens against Israeli strikes in Gaza. Read More.

Toronto, Canada, Saturday, May 15 – Several pro-Israel protesters were violently assaulted and injured by pro-Palestinian protesters at a counter-demonstration in Toronto. Read More.

Washington, DC, United States, Saturday, May 15 – Influential progressive Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez called Israel an apartheid state in a tweet that marked an inflection point in her increasing criticism of Israel. Read More.

Montreal, Canada, Sunday, May 16 – Clashes broke out in Montreal after pro-Palestinian demonstrators showed up at a pro-Israel rally, they throw rocks and yelled antisemitic slur at peaceful pro-Israel demonstrators. Read More.

Egham, England, May 15 – Posters of Israeli flags with swastikas replacing the Star of David have been found on Royal Holloway campus. Read More.

London, England, Sunday, May 16 – Police have arrested four people after a convoy of at least six cars was filmed driving down London’s Finchley Road, blasting their horns and screaming “F*** the Jews, rape their daughters.” Read More.

Skokie, Illinois, United States, Sunday, May 16 – Police in north suburban Skokie are investigating a report of pro-Palestinian vandalism at a synagogue as a hate crime. Read More.

Salt Lake City, Utah, United States, Sunday, May 16 – Someone etched a swastika on the glass door of a synagogue in Utah, as seen in a photo posted online Sunday. Rabbi Avremi Zippel believes the vandalism is related to recent escalation of violence between Israel and Gaza. Read More.

New York City, United States, Sunday, May 16 – The official Twitter account of the State of Israel Twitter account has accused Bella Hadid of “advocating for throwing Jews into the sea” after she attended a pro-Palestinian march in New York. Read More.

Blacksburg, Virginia, United States, Monday, May 17 – A police report has been filed after the Israeli flag and Virginia Tech flag were stolen from the Malcolm Rosenberg Hillel Center at Virginia Tech over the weekend. A statement from Hillel reads, “This antisemitic act has made many Jewish and pro-Israel students feel unwelcome and unsafe on campus.” Read More.
Pakistan, Monday, May 17 –  A swastika, one of the many pro-Nazi symbols used among Pakistanis who hate Israeli and claim to support Palestinians, was spotted by social media users at a rally in Pakistan. Read More.
Bahía Blanca, Argentina, Monday, May 17 – Horrendous vandalism inciting murder of Jews was spray-painted on a Jewish community building in Bahía Blanca. The graffiti read, “We will kill you Jewish rats.” There were several other instances of antisemitic graffiti in cities across Argentina, relating to the conflict between Israel and Hamas. Read More.

Erfurt, Germany, Monday, May 17 –  Antisemitic lettering was smeared on four parked cars in the Albrechtstraße and Auenstraße area of Erfurt. Police assume a connection with the current Middle East conflict. Read More.

London, United Kingdom, Tuesday, May 18 – The UCL Jewish society (J-Soc) told Jewish News its Instagram account had a number of deaths threats and calls for physical violence, as well as Holocaust references. Read More.

Los Angeles, California, United States, Tuesday, May 18 – Pro-Palestinian demonstrators physically assaulted Jewish diners at a Los Angeles restaurant. Read More.

Ankara, Turkey, Tuesday, May 18 – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has accused Israel of “terrorism” against the Palestinians, saying, “It is in their nature.” Read More.

New York City, United States, Thursday, May 20 – NYC Jewish residents are attacked by pro-Palestinian protestors at popular Upper East Side establishment Ess-A-Bagel. Read More.

New York City, United States, Thursday, May 20 – New York’s heavily Jewish diamond district faced violent attacks from pro-Palestinian protestors. In a statement to The Algemeiner, the New York Police Department confirmed that “two commercial fireworks were thrown from a car” and that one person suffered a minor burn. Read More.

London, England, Friday, May 21 – A man has been arrested after allegedly attacking a Jewish driver in Golders Green on Friday morning. The area is known to be home to many Jewish residents. One eyewitness said: “I never seen anything like it in my life. The man jumped into a Jewish man’s car window and tried to break it down.” Read More. 

New York City, United States, Saturday, May 22 – The NYPD said three men hopped out of a blue Toyota Camry outside a synagogue in Borough Park around 7 p.m. and made antisemitic statements toward four Jewish men who were observing Shabbat. Read More.

London, England, Sunday, May 23 – Pro-Palestinian demonstrators in London were heard exclaiming, “We’ll find some Jews there! We want the Jews! We want the Zionists, we want their blood!”
