Days-Old Infant Boy from Syria Flown to Israel for Emergency Heart Surgery

According to the Times of Israel, a 10-day-old infant boy from Syria was air-lifted to Israel via Cyprus for an emergency medical procedure to correct a congenital heart defect.

The baby boy’s surgery took place at the Sheba Medical Center in Ramat Gan, just outside Tel Aviv. The infant was on a respirator and was moved to a recovery ward post-operation. Since the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic, this was the first case of an emergency medical situation from abroad at the world renowned hospital.

The baby’s father will be staying at the hospital with the baby for several weeks until doctors have determined that the child is well enough to travel again. Prior to the outbreak of the coronovirus, Israel often received medical patients from abroad, not only from allies and neighbors, but from countries which remain formally hostile to the Jewish State.

Throughout much of the Syrian Civil War, Israel provided medical treatment to wounded Syrians along its border with Syria, until the the border region was retaken by Syrian dictator Bashar Assad in the summer of 2018.
