Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM) Chief Government Affairs Officer Lisa Katz issued the following statement on Thursday, following a Jewish Insider report that Washington, D.C. City Councilwoman and mayoral candidate Janeese Lewis George said she would not attend events focused on “promoting Zionism and apartheid”:

“Councilwoman Janeese Lewis George’s exclusion and ostracization of mainstream Jewish communal organizations indicate distorted thinking not befitting an elected public official. At a moment in history when antisemitism is on the rise across the United States and globe, true civic leadership demands dialogue and engagement, particularly when the issues at hand are complex or uncomfortable. The councilwoman is doing a grave disservice to her constituents by avoiding the difficult, but necessary, conversations that must be had.”

“Through my work at CAM, I’ve had the privilege of working with mayors and municipal officials across North America who exemplify what true leadership looks like. They show up, listen, and forge partnerships and coalitions based on mutual respect and shared responsibility, even when there isn’t universal agreement on every matter. The residents of Washington, D.C. deserve leaders who build bridges, not walls.”
