The pro-Palestinian group “basel4palestine” is promoting an upcoming anti-Israel rally in Basel, Switzerland, under the slogan “Death to Zionism.”
Scheduled for August 29, the event marks 129 years since Theodor Herzl convened the First Zionist Congress.
The group’s flyer depicts an Israeli tank marked with an inverted red triangle, which has become a global symbol of antisemitic violence since the October 7th massacre.

The event’s status remains uncertain. Basel-Stadt cantonal police had received no permit application, Jüdische Allgemeine reported. Demonstrations in public spaces require official approval from Basel-Stadt authorities. Police normally expect applications at least two weeks before the planned date. They would not reveal what action they might take if the organizers proceeded without authorization.
Jonathan Kreutner, secretary-general of the Swiss Federation of Jewish Communities, urged authorities to find those responsible and hold them legally accountable if they stage an unauthorized rally. He warned that the rhetoric could extend to Jews themselves, further unsettling Jewish communities.
The 1897 Congress founded the Zionist Organization, later renamed the World Zionist Organization, and adopted the Basel Program. The program formalized Zionism’s goal of establishing a national home for the Jewish people that would be secured under public law and recognized internationally.
Herzl later wrote in his diary, “At Basel I founded the Jewish State.”
Exactly 129 years later, anti-Israel activists have chosen the same city and date to proclaim “Death to Zionism.” The slogan calls for the destruction of the national liberation movement that restored the Jewish people’s sovereignty in their ancestral homeland.
