French authorities arrested Rima Hassan, a far-left member of the European Parliament, this week after she shared a social media post that appeared to justify a 1972 terrorist attack at Israel’s main international airport.
Hassan was taken into custody on Thursday over a March 26 post on X, according to French media reports. Authorities are now examining whether the content constituted support for terrorism under French law.
The post referenced the May 1972 attack at Lod Airport — today Ben Gurion Airport — near Tel Aviv. Three members of the Japanese Red Army, a now-defunct far-left terrorist group, carried out the assault, killing 26 people in one of the deadliest terrorist incidents in Israel’s history.
Hassan shared a statement from an individual convicted of the massacre, who sought to legitimize the killings by citing alleged “oppression” of Palestinians. The post was later deleted.
French authorities have not publicly detailed potential charges. The case centers on whether amplifying rhetoric that rationalizes the murder of civilians meets the legal threshold for endorsing terrorism.
The case raises clear questions about elected officials who amplify rhetoric that seeks to justify attacks targeting Israeli civilians.
