An 18-year-old Minnesota man allegedly planned an ISIS-inspired attack on the Mall of America because of its Jewish ownership.
The Justice Department said Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud disclosed that motive to an undercover FBI agent.
The mall, located in Bloomington, near Minneapolis, is the largest in the United States. Its owner, Triple Five Group, is controlled by the Jewish Ghermezian family.
Mohamud paid the agent $600 for a Norinco AK-47-style rifle, four 30-round magazines, and about 200 live rounds. Agents arrested him at gunpoint on October 6 after he exited the vehicle with the weapons.
According to court documents filed October 7 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota, Mohamud intended to carry out the attack on October 24.
The filings show Mohamud wrote that he wanted to “harm the Jew just like the brothers in Australia Bondi Beach harmed the Jews.” He added that he would “just go grab assault rifle, bomb is too complicated. kill maybe 30-60 people inshallah and have 260 ammo.”
“I can’t wait until I kill kuffar man. Oct. 24 is the day inshallah,” he wrote. The affidavit describes “kuffar” as a derogatory term for non-Muslims.
Court documents also say Mohamud discussed recruiting another person to shoot or bomb the mall. He allegedly distributed terror propaganda, recorded a pledge of allegiance to ISIS, and planned to join al-Shabaab or ISIS in Somalia.
He faces one count of securing a gun and ammunition intended for use in a felony or a federal terror crime.
Seamus Hughes, a senior researcher at the University of Nebraska Omaha’s National Counterterrorism Innovation, Technology and Education Center, told JNS that Mohamud was the eighth person federally arrested this year for ISIS-related activities.
