Security personnel confiscated an Israeli flag from a fan during the Iran-New Zealand World Cup match at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on Monday, while Palestinian flags visible throughout the venue — including one held openly near the Israeli flag — faced no enforcement.
Footage shared on social media showed security staff demanding the fan surrender his Israeli flag as he asked why Palestinian flags on display around him were not being removed as well. “When you take that flag down, I’ll take mine down,” he told officials.
Security personnel cited FIFA policy, stating that only flags representing the two competing teams were permitted inside the venue. Yet Palestinian flags remained openly displayed in the stands throughout the game.
The fan was told his flag would be returned after the match. When he later asked for it back, a security guard told him that FIFA had taken the flag and that he would not be getting it back.
FIFA has not publicly commented on the incident.
