A 13-year-old French Jewish boy was assaulted at knifepoint in central Paris on Monday while on his way to synagogue.
The teenager, who was wearing a kippah, was approached by a group of five individuals in the city’s 18th arrondissement. According to his account, he was knocked to the ground, struck in the face, and threatened with a knife. His jacket and AirPods were taken during the attack. He also reported that antisemitic insults were directed at him.
The Paris Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that an investigation has been opened into armed robbery and armed violence carried out in a group and aggravated by discrimination. A suspect born in June 2007 was arrested and remains in custody.
President of the Representative Council of French Jewish Institutions (CRIF) Yonathan Arfi commented: “How do you find the words to explain to a 13-year-old child that he is being attacked because he is Jewish? Who will be able to restore his confidence in the future tomorrow?”
“Hatred of Jews is never acceptable, but it is even less so when it targets children,” he added.
