The owner of a cafe near the French city of Lyon told a Jewish man, “There are too many of you,“ in a video that surfaced on Friday.
When he asked who she meant, the cafe owner replied, “The Jewish community,” and added that this “upsets people.”

French police opened a criminal investigation on Saturday, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez confirmed.
French Cabinet Minister for Gender Equality and Combating Discrimination Aurore Bergé said the cafe owner had been summoned for questioning that afternoon.
Bergé called the conduct intolerable. “Antisemitism and racism are not opinions; they are criminal offenses,” she said.
A separate video that emerged this week showed an Irish man threatening a Jewish couple from Australia at a supermarket in Avignon. He told them he would “put a bullet” in them after the Australian woman confronted him over allegedly saying that “Hitler should have finished the job.”
According to the Australian Jewish Association, the confrontation followed a discussion in which the Australian woman criticized the Irish government’s anti-Israel policies and what she described as its support for Hamas and Hezbollah.

Yonathan Arfi, president of the Representative Council of French Jewish Institutions (CRIF), addressed both cases. “Let us reject both discrimination against Jews and the rhetoric that equates Nazism and Zionism,” he wrote.
