Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM) CEO Sacha Roytman issued the following statement on Wednesday, following the attempted hijacking of FlyDubai Flight #1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv:
“This morning, just weeks after the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, a terrorist atrocity of potentially a similar magnitude was narrowly avoided only by a miracle. While the details are still emerging, we salute the passengers of FlyDubai Flight #1073 for their bravery in overpowering the hijacker pilot and preventing him from crashing the plane, undoubtedly saving countless lives both on board and on the ground, wherever his intended target was.”
“The incident showed both the perils and promises of today’s reality in the Middle East. Radical Islamists, driven by antisemitic hatred incited by the despotic Iranian regime, still pose a grave danger to regional security and stability. Yet, at the same time, the commendable hospitality displayed by Saudi Arabia to the Israeli passengers following their emergency landing in Tabuk would have been unfathomable just a few years ago, and offered a glimpse of what the fruits of broader normalization and cooperation between Israel and its neighbors could look like.”
“Lessons must be learned and implemented from today’s events. In the aviation sector, stricter background checks and monitoring have to be put in place to detect signs of extremism among pilots, particularly those who fly sensitive routes. More generally, today’s events should serve as a wake-up call. The global war against terrorism is not over, and there must be renewed security vigilance and coordination between governments and relevant authorities around the world. If a FlyDubai pilot can suddenly become a suicide hijacker, no one can afford complacency.”
