Sacha Roytman, CEO of the Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM), issued the following statement in response to the attack at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan, on Thursday afternoon:
“Going to synagogue shouldn’t be an act of courage. Today, however, Jews across America were yet again forced to confront violence at their doorstep. We are grateful to the security and law enforcement personnel who responded quickly and bravely, preventing a horrific tragedy. We call on elected officials to speak clearly and without hesitation against antisemitic incitement that fuels such attacks. In America, only Jews need courage to go to their place of worship.”
“Unfortunately, today’s incident is part of the larger pattern of violence targeting Jewish Americans. We saw it in the past at Tree of Life in Pittsburgh and Chabad of Poway. We saw it once more last year in Washington, D.C., and Boulder, Colorado. Today we saw it in West Bloomfield.”
“We stand with the Temple Israel community and all Jewish residents of the Detroit area. The fight against antisemitism demands solidarity, action, and accountability from every leader, every institution, and every citizen. Antisemitism is a moral rot in our society that must be excised wherever and whenever it manifests.”
