Rafi Rom, who has lived in the Greek capital of Athens for 12 years, said security guards forced him from a social gathering there on Saturday night after he revealed his identity to other guests.
The guards told Rom he posed a “security risk.”
When Rom pressed for details, the guards gave none. They repeated the accusation and told him to leave.
Nomad Hub Greece, which hosts meetups in Athens for digital nomads, remote workers, foreign residents, and travelers, organized the event. Rom said he had attended before. At the time of Walla‘s report, neither the organizers nor the venue had responded to his account.
The gathering took place at 21 Grams, a rooftop bar in Avissinias Square in central Athens, with views of the Acropolis. Organizers promoted it as an international event open to the public, with free entry through advance registration. The listing showed 76 confirmed attendees.
Rom said 50 or 60 people were already there when he arrived. He ordered a beer, struck up conversations, and introduced himself as Jewish and Israeli. Shortly before the guards approached him, he noticed a man he recognized from before, a Lebanese Christian he believed was one of the hosts, talking with security personnel.
“It is clear to me that the only reason is my background,” Rom said. “What security risk do I pose? It is important that people know this happened. This incident shook me.”
“Clearly, I personally will no longer attend events by that host,” he said. “It is important to warn others as well.”
