A Hamas-linked organization is now training young Palestinians in Gaza to edit and shape Wikipedia entries about the Israel-Hamas war — an effort that raises serious concerns about coordinated narrative manipulation on one of the world’s most widely-used information platforms.
The program is run by Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor. The group recently launched the third cycle of its “WikiRights” initiative in the Gaza Strip. It selected 12 young men and women for structured training in research, documentation, and direct Wikipedia editing in both Arabic and English.
Euro-Med presents the initiative as a human rights effort. It says participants learn how to create new entries, expand existing articles, and use Wikipedia’s editing tools professionally. The organization claims the goal is to address what it describes as gaps and misinformation in coverage of alleged human rights violations in Gaza.
This year’s program centers explicitly on what Euro-Med labels “the Israeli genocide in the Gaza Strip.” Upon completing the course, participants are expected to publish what the group calls “documentation-based articles” rooted in “live testimonies,” with the stated aim of ensuring that what it describes as “genocide victims” are represented on the platform.
Accusing Israel of “genocide” appropriates a term born from the Holocaust — the systematic attempt to annihilate the Jewish people — and turns that history into a political weapon against the Jewish state.
Documented Hamas Links Underscore the Agenda
Euro-Med’s leadership history adds another layer of concern. In 2013, Israel published a list identifying what it described as principal Hamas operatives and affiliated institutions operating in Europe. Both Mazen Kahel, a current board chair of Euro-Med, and Ramy Abdu, the organization’s founder and former chair, appeared on that list.
Abdu has also been involved with the European Campaign to End the Siege on Gaza and the Council for European Palestinian Relations, organizations that have been linked to Hamas networks. In 2020, Israel imposed sanctions on Abdu under its anti-terrorism law.
When an organization linked to Hamas systematically trains contributors to shape coverage of an ongoing war, it is a deliberate effort to rewrite history in real time.
