Vandals spray-painted antisemitic graffiti on a Jewish-owned shop in Prague’s Vinohrady district last week.
The words “Fascists” and “Holocaust 2025” appeared on the store’s window and entrance.
The shop, which sells Jewish souvenirs and kosher food, has now faced three attacks in less than a month. As a result, Czech Jews view the repeated targeting as a dangerous warning sign in a country known for close ties to Israel.
Community Leaders Condemn Attack
“This is an unacceptable act that crosses all boundaries,” said Pavel Kral, Chairman of Prague’s Jewish community. He urged authorities to treat the graffiti as more than simple vandalism. The wording, he stressed, carried a direct antisemitic threat by invoking the Holocaust.
Nevertheless, police have not arrested any suspects. Consequently, Jewish leaders warn that a lack of action will embolden further attacks and deepen fear among Prague’s Jews.
Police Response and Possible Charges
Prague police confirmed three incidents at the same store in recent weeks. “In the last month we have recorded three incidents of spray-painting at a store on Belgicka Street. They are being investigated as property damage,” said police spokesperson Jan Rybansky.
In addition, Czech law sets a penalty of up to three years in prison for property damage of this type. However, critics argue that officials must also acknowledge the antisemitic motive, given the explicit language used in the graffiti.
Rising Concerns Over Antisemitism in Central Europe
The Czech Republic has long upheld strong ties with Israel and its Jewish population. Yet, the repeated targeting of one Jewish business shows how antisemitism continues to spread across Europe.
Therefore, Prague’s Jewish leaders demand swift and decisive action. They insist that protecting Jewish life in the city requires holding vandals accountable, deterring future crimes, and confronting antisemitic hatred directly.
