Protesters displayed an Israeli flag smeared with blood-like red paint and bearing the words “Israel Kills” during a St. Louis Blues home game on Thursday at Enterprise Center.
From a private suite overlooking the stands, others hung banners reading “Free America from Israel.” One showed an Israeli flag covering the Statue of Liberty’s mouth, while another depicted her in chains.
The portrayal of the United States as being beholden to Israel echoes a longstanding antisemitic conspiracy theory alleging secret “Zionist” control over the American government.
Images from the NHL hockey game also showed a sign featuring a crossed-out Star of David amid red stains. Some demonstrators wore Palestinian flag colors.
Arena security and police seized the banners and removed those holding them. The demonstration also violated Enterprise Center rules requiring signs to be related to the event, prohibiting their attachment to any part of the building, and barring offensive language or imagery.
Freedom Convoy USA, which said it organized the protest, departed Los Angeles in mid-October on a cross-country campaign to end U.S. aid to Israel. The group planned to reach Washington, D.C., on October 26 and petition Congress to redirect the funding toward domestic needs. Members also distributed leaflets outside the arena.
In a statement on Monday, St. Louis Blues chairman and owner Tom Stillman called the displays “vile messages of hate” that were “unfortunate and unforgivable.” He said they in no way represented the team’s fans or the city.
“Antisemitism has no place in our community,” Stillman emphasized.
At a St. Louis Blues home game, fans pressed a banner against the glass: the Israeli flag splattered in blood, with the words "Israel Kills."
This isn't criticism of a government. Dripping blood over the flag of the world's only Jewish state is an image built to brand Jews as… pic.twitter.com/VVqo9Jk3oW
