Three unknown individuals hurled antisemitic slurs at Israeli singer-songwriter Elior Zandani before assaulting him in the Greek capital of Athens, he said on Monday.

According to Zandani, the attackers targeted him after hearing him speak Hebrew.

Zandani, who competed on “The Next Star” in its ninth season, came to Athens over the weekend to celebrate his 25th birthday and perform in tavernas, according to his Instagram post. The confrontation took place near the city’s Olympic Stadium.

“I stepped outside to make a phone call, and during the conversation, I found myself near the taxis, where three people noticed I was speaking Hebrew,” Zandani wrote. “I’m not exactly good at hiding the fact that I’m Israeli.”

Zandani suffered nasal fractures and significant swelling. He acknowledged that he fought back before running away.

In a recent case, a young employee at the Athens restaurant Vinoir Bistro asked Israeli tourist Anna Doshin her nationality. Once she identified herself as Israeli, the worker allegedly responded by telling her, “There is no hookah for you,” removing the one she had ordered and refusing to serve her.

In June 2025, pro-Palestinian activists attacked an Israeli tourist in Athens after overhearing him use Google Maps in Hebrew.

Months before that, assailants stabbed two Israeli citizens in an Athens shopping center after reportedly hearing them talk in Hebrew.
