The Jewish Community of Munich and Upper Bavaria reported a serious antisemitic threat after a letter and a live handgun cartridge arrived by mail last Thursday.
Steven Guttman, the community’s managing director, said the package was sent to the community center that houses the Ohel Jakob Synagogue. The letter included explicit threats against Jews, stating: “Every Jew will die…I will cause all the deaths.”
Bavaria’s Criminal Police Department is investigating the incident.
Yehoshua Chmiel, vice president of the Jewish Community of Munich and Upper Bavaria, said the community regularly received antisemitic threats. However, he warned that this incident marked a dangerous escalation, adding that this marked the first time a real cartridge had been sent.
Chmiel also expressed frustration over what he described as a lack of effective action against antisemitism. “We feel abandoned,” he said. “There are no actions against antisemitism. There are speeches, but they don’t help us.”
His comments echoed concerns voiced by Jewish leaders across Europe. Many warn that official condemnations have not translated into meaningful enforcement or preventive measures.
Ludwig Spaenle, Bavaria’s commissioner for antisemitism, condemned the mailing. He called the threat “evil and inhumane” and urged state security authorities to identify those responsible as quickly as possible.
