Three men reportedly attacked a Jewish couple, shouting “dirty Jew” at the husband and throwing water and spitting on them, near the famed Rialto Bridge in Venice, Italy, on Saturday night.

One of the assailants then unleashed a large dog who lunged at the man and bit the smartphone in his pocket.

The couple were easily identifiable as Jews, with the husband wearing a kippah and a long beard. He and his wife, five months pregnant, managed to escape to Gam Gam, a kosher restaurant where they had dined earlier. They did not report the attack before flying back to the United States a few hours later.

According to Italian newspapers, members of the Jewish community informed police of the incident, who have opened an investigation.

“It’s unfortunate that such serious attacks happen in our city, which I have always considered, and still consider, tolerant and intelligent,” said Sion Yehiel Banin Rahamim, owner of Gam Gam. “The attack was in no way provoked, and passersby acted as if nothing had happened.”
