David Soffer, Director of State Engagement for the Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM), based in Kansas, issued the following statement on Wednesday:
The Combat Antisemitism Movement is appalled that Kansas State University has hired Derron Borders, who publicly attempted to justify Hamas’ barbaric October 7th attacks, including the rape and mutilation of women and children, as was widely reported in 2023.
Mr. Borders now serves in a role investigating civil rights and Title IX complaints. No Jewish student, or any student holding views contrary to his, can have confidence in the fairness of such investigations. His comments after October 7thalone should have disqualified him from this position of trust.
We call on Kansas State University to investigate how Mr. Borders was hired. The information about his public statements was readily available. If the university failed to review it, that is a serious lapse. If it did review it and hired him anyway, that is deeply troubling.
Today highlights why states must define antisemitism in law and combat the antisemitism we see in our education system. We commend the Kansas Legislature for passing SB 44 to adopt the IHRA definition of antisemitism, which remains a critical starting point to ensuring our education system is free of bias and hate.
