An anti-Israel activist defaced a statue of late World War II-era British leader Winston Churchill in central London overnight between Thursday and Friday.
The vandal sprayed the monument with Hamas-linked symbols and anti-Israel slogans. Shortly afterward, police arrested a 38-year-old man on suspicion of racially-aggravated criminal damage.
The graffiti included inverted red triangles, which Hamas uses in propaganda to mark Israeli targets, as well as the phrases “Globalize the Intifada,” “Zionist war criminal, “Free Palestine,” “Stop the genocide,” and “Never again is now.”

Meanwhile, a Dutch activist network calling itself “Free the Filton 24 NL” claimed responsibility. The group identified the suspect as Olax Outis.
In an online statement, Outis wrote that he had “come to the United Kingdom to deface a statue of one of history’s most well-known war criminals, Winston Churchill.”
He continued, “This well-known zionist leader is still one of the best examples to explain how zionism is rooted in antisemitism.” He added that history books “seldomly mention him as the Colonial Secretary in charge of implementing the Balfour Declaration.”
Police continue to investigate the incident.
