London Police Accused of Arresting Jewish Lawyer for Wearing Star of David, Calling It ‘Antagonizing’ to Protesters

London’s Metropolitan Police arrested a Jewish lawyer after he wore a Star of David necklace near an anti-Israel protest earlier this year.

Officers allegedly said the symbol “antagonized” demonstrators and could “cause offense,” The Telegraph reported.

The lawyer spent almost ten hours in custody. He called the arrest an effort to “criminalize the wearing of a Star of David.”

The incident took place on August 29 outside the Israeli Embassy in London. According to the lawyer, he attended the protest to observe possible unlawful behavior and monitor police actions.

Soon after he arrived, officers handcuffed him, placed him in a vehicle, and took him for questioning.

Police Deny Arrest Related to Jewish Symbol

The Metropolitan Police denied that the Star of David led to the arrest. Instead, they claimed the man ignored orders to remain apart from opposing groups.

The lawyer firmly rejected that explanation. He insisted that police targeted him only because he displayed a Jewish symbol. He said he recorded about thirty cases of criminal behavior by protesters, including antisemitic insults such as “Zionist baby killer.” Yet none, he pointed out, resulted in prosecution.

“Police are arguing that wearing a Star of David is antagonizing to protesters while we have seen all manner of antisemitic slogans on placards and shouted at Jews that have gone unpunished,” he told The Telegraph. He described the arrest as a clear example of “two-tier policing.”

Double Standards and Erosion of Equal Treatment

This case underscores growing fears of unequal enforcement. While antisemitic chants and placards go unpunished, a Jew wearing a Star of David faces arrest. The contrast exposes how deeply antisemitism has seeped into public life.

Moreover, treating Jewish identity as a provocation erodes the very principles democracy stands on. When visible faith becomes a trigger for police action, the right to religious freedom and expression is placed in jeopardy.

Equal protection under the law must apply to all citizens. British authorities must therefore ensure that Jews can live and worship openly — without fear, intimidation, or shame.
