A man attacked an i24NEWS team in Belfast, Northern Ireland, over the weekend, throwing a beer mug that struck cameraman Nadav Abbas in the head after he heard the journalists were from Israel.

i24NEWS reporter Yonatan Raveh was working alongside Abbas on a documentary about rising antisemitism across Europe. The pair were conducting street interviews near a bar complex in the city when the assailant approached them.

“He gave us the middle finger and shouted, ‘f*** Israel,'” Raveh recaled.

The man followed the journalists as they tried to walk away and attempted to grab their camera equipment. Bar security came over but did not intervene. The assailant then threw the mug at Abbas, striking him in the head and cutting him.

Only then did security step in, bringing both journalists inside the bar. They said they had called police, but the journalists left before officers arrived and returned to Israel so Abbas could receive medical treatment for his injury.

On Monday, it was announced that the suspect, a man in his 30s, had been arrested and charged in connection with the incident.

Although it was their first physical assault in Northern Ireland, Raveh said the crew had encountered hostility elsewhere while filming. Anti-Israel activists in the Spanish capital Madrid previously surrounded them and forced them to delete their footage. A similar incident occurred in New York City.
