Yehia Amin received a 90-day jail sentence on Tuesday for assaulting an Israeli tourist near Times Square in New York City days after the October 7th massacre.
Amin pleaded guilty in March to third-degree assault as a hate crime under a deal with the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office that reduced seven original charges to one.
During the hearing, Judge Althea Drysdale of the New York City Criminal Courts noticed Amin smiling and questioned him, according to Glenn Richter, founder of the New York Jewish Community Judicial Watch Group, who spoke with JNS. “I see you smiling,” she said, Richter recalled. “This is a serious matter. Why are you smiling?”
Richter said Amin answered through an interpreter that he wanted to look good for photographs. He interpreted Amin’s hand gesture as a “V for victory,” suggesting Amin might have viewed the plea agreement as a favorable outcome.
Prosecutors said Amin followed the 23-year-old Israeli and four friends, all wearing kippahs, near Times Square on October 18, 2023. His threats included “Hamas should kill more of you,” “May Allah kill all the Jews,” and “All Jews should die.”
Amin then ran up behind the Israeli and punched him in the back of the head as the group tried to escape, prosecutors said.
