A Maryland man was sentenced on Wednesday to 15 years in prison for attempting to provide material support to ISIS.
Michael Sam Teekay Jr., 22, also told an undercover officer his “Plan B” was attacking Jews and Israel supporters in the United States.
Between March and April 2023, Teekaye told the officer he had researched buildings near his home that support Israel. He said he thought about how to “gun down members or anyone involved.”
By mid-2024, Teekaye had purchased ammunition and paid for range time, calling it training for the terror group. He then tried to buy a Kalashnikov assault rifle but was denied because of probation from a state case.
Teekaye later told the officer he had connected with an ISIS fighter in Somalia. He planned to travel there and join ISIS, sending screenshots of his itinerary and visa paperwork.
On October 10, 2024, Teekaye sent the officer a photo of himself masked and holding a machete. The caption declared “victory or shahada [martyrdom]… either you do it here or over there or both.”
When the officer asked if he was certain about joining ISIS, Teekaye said he had done a lot of research, adding, “they are the only group that has the most true and sincere intentions.”
FBI agents arrested Teekaye at BWI Airport on October 14, 2024.
U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland Kelly O’Hayes said Teekaye “sought to support a foreign terrorist organization that has committed unspeakable acts of violence and took real-world steps to carry out a terrorist attack in Maryland.”
Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Baltimore Field Office Jimmy Paul added that the sentencing “reinforces the gravity of Michael Teekaye’s crimes,” noting that law enforcement action likely saved lives.
After his arrest, Teekaye said he expected to be free again in 20 years, when he would be around 40. “Jihad will never stop,” he said. “I’ll come, and I’ll kill your soldiers. I’ll kill you.”
