Michigan City Council Candidate Under Fire for Anti-Semitic Israel Activism
The Jewish News Syndicate is reporting that Mozhgan Savabieasfahani, a candidate for the Ann Arbor City Council, has come under fire for her anti-Israel activism that is clearly anti-Semitic. Savabieasfahani has called for boycotts against Israel and staged anti-Israel protests outside Ann Arbor’s Congregation Beth Israel.
For the past 16 years, protesters have stood outside Congregation Beth Israel and harassed congregants, holding signs that say “Jewish Power Corrupts,” “Zionism is Racism” and “RESIST Jewish Power,” among other statements. Savabieasfahani often takes part in these protests wearing, in what the Michigan Democratic Jewish Caucus (MDJC) described as, “a sandwich board depicting a swastika, likening Israel to Nazi Germany.”
The MDJC stated “Blaming American Jews for policies (real or perceived) promulgated by the State of Israel, as protesting a synagogue would imply, is patently anti-Semitic.” This would also be classified as anti-Semitism under under the widely used the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s Working Definition of Anti-Semitism.
Savabieasfahani has not only used anti-Israel protests to target Jews, but more recently promoted a deeply offensive cartoon on Facebook depicting one of her primary opponents, Jen Eyer, “standing in a wallet, holding wads of cash and receiving money from a pig holding a cigar.”
The Ann Arbor election is scheduled for August 4th, 2020.
