Vandals scrawled “Coloni Sionisti Nazisti” (“Zionist Settler Nazis”) across a mural of Anne Frank and Primo Levi in Milan, Italy, last week.
Artist aleXsandro Palombo created the mural for International Holocaust Remembrance Day earlier this year. It shows Frank seated opposite Levi beneath a starry sky inscribed “Memory is no longer enough.”
Vandals painted over the inscription before scrawling the antisemitic slogan.
Frank, known for the diary she kept while hiding with her family from the Nazis in an Amsterdam attic, perished at Bergen-Belsen at the age of 16.
Levi survived the Holocaust as a young man and later chronicled his experience in the landmark memoir Survival in Auschwitz.
Israeli Ambassador to Italy Jonathan Peled condemned the vandalism on X. “Vandalizing a place that is a symbol of the memory of Anne Frank and Primo Levi means attacking the memory of the Holocaust and our collective duty to never forget,” he wrote.
“Antisemitic hatred, in all its forms, must be rejected with clarity and responsibility. Memory is a commitment that no hateful graffiti can erase,” he continued.
Vandals have repeatedly targeted Palombo’s Holocaust memorial artworks.
