A quarter century after 9/11, more than one in four Muslim Americans surveyed by the Jerusalem Center for Security and Foreign Affairs (JCFA) blamed Israel or Zionists for the attacks, according to findings released on Sunday.
More of them embraced that antisemitic falsehood (27.40%) than correctly identified Al Qaeda (23.56%), the Islamist terrorist organization that carried out the attacks.
Another 18.51% of Muslim respondents pinned the attacks on the U.S. government or the CIA. Among non-Muslims, 62.24% named Al Qaeda.
JCFA Senior Researcher Dr. Irwin J. Mansdorf and International Freedom Coalition President Dr. Charles Jacobs surveyed 416 Muslim Americans and 429 non-Muslims from September 10-16, alongside a general population cohort of 513 that included 24 Muslims.
Asked about online political commentator Hasan Piker’s remark that “America deserved 9/11,” 28.13% of Muslim participants agreed or strongly agreed. Just 47.11% disagreed or strongly disagreed, compared with 71.33% of non-Muslims.
Fewer than half of Muslim respondents (44.71%) backed a government-mandated, standardized 9/11 curriculum, against 62% of non-Muslims. More than a third of the Muslim sample stayed neutral.
Among adults under 30, only 40% identified al-Qaeda, while 28.57% said they were unsure who was responsible. JCFA warned that this uncertainty “leaves them highly susceptible to digital manipulation.”
Mansdorf told The Jerusalem Post that Muslim Americans “to a much greater extent than the U.S. population as a whole, do not accept that the attacks were carried out by the Islamist terrorists of Al Qaeda.” it.
