Northern Virginia Salon Owner Refuses Service to Jewish Client Over Israeli Identity

Northern Virginia salon owner Fatana Karimi refused service to a client on Thursday after learning she was half-Israeli.

The encounter took place at Karimi, a permanent makeup studio in Alexandria. The two had been speaking warmly about Afghanistan, poetry, food, and the client’s novel when she mentioned her Jewish and Israeli background.

Karimi stopped short. “Get out of my shop,” she said. “I can’t provide service to an Israeli. It’s against my political beliefs. You need to leave immediately.”

Karimi then denied Israel’s existence. “There is no such thing as Israel,” she said. “It’s Palestine. A bunch of Jews from New York showed up a few years ago and stole the land from the Arabs.”

The claim is a gross distortion of history. Jews are indigenous to the Land of Israel, where they have maintained a continuous presence for millennia.

As the client gathered her belongings to leave, Karimi began recording her while chanting, “Free, free Palestine!” She then insisted that the woman apologize for what she described as “genocide.”

The client demanded a full refund. Karimi refused and told her she should be ashamed of herself and her people, according to the client. The client also said Karimi continued recording after she asked her to stop while changing out of the treatment shirt.

The client’s bank subsequently refunded the charge.

Karimi later defended her refusal of service in a video posted online.
