An online document urging Italians to identify Israeli citizens and Jews staying in hotels and other tourist accommodations across the country has been taken down after intervention by Italian government officials, including National Coordinator for the Fight Against Antisemitism Gen. Pasquale Angelosanto.
Walker Meghnagi, president of the Jewish Community of Milan, gravely condemned the Google form.
“I think we’re going back to the 1930s, to hunting Jews,” Meghnagi said.
The form left little doubt about its purpose. “This form is intended to record cases of Zionist tourism, property purchases, and, more generally, Zionist neo-colonization in Italy,” it read.
The form said responses would go to the Global Sumud Movement, an organization known for coordinating flotillas to Gaza, and remain confidential.
It also asked respondents to name locations where they had seen Israeli or Jewish visitors, according to La Repubblica, and whether local organizations or activist groups were already “managing the phenomenon.”
Meghnagi warned that the campaign could inspire violence against those it targeted. “What is happening today shows that there are unbalanced individuals out there, and if this kind of message spreads widely enough, you are certain to find someone willing to act on it,” he said. “For this reason, mapping where Jews are is extremely serious.”
“History shows that when propaganda identifies a target and provides the coordinates to find it, violence ceases to be a possibility and becomes a certainty,” said Davide Riccardo Romano, director of the Jewish Brigade Museum in Milan.
