A carnival event in Andorra has triggered condemnation after organizers staged a mock execution of an effigy marked with the Israeli flag.
The incident took place Monday during Carnestoltes, a traditional pre-Lenten celebration. In the town of Encamp, organizers usually stage the symbolic trial and burning of a carnival figure. This year, however, they replaced that figure with an effigy dressed in blue. They painted the Israeli flag on its face.
According to reports and social media footage, participants put the effigy on trial. They sentenced it to death. They hanged it, shot it, and then burned it.
Members of Andorra’s small Jewish community responded with alarm. “This is a ritual they perform every year as part of carnival, where they mock many things,” Jewish resident Esther Pujol told Ynet. “This time they dressed the effigy in the colors of the Israeli flag, with a Star of David on its face. They put it on trial, sentenced it to death and carried out the sentence by shooting and burning it. It is completely unacceptable.”
Pujol said she had never before seen anti-Israel or antisemitic imagery included in the festival. As a result, she contacted Andorran lawmakers to express her outrage.
Reporting also indicates that the mayor of Encamp and other local officials attended the ceremony.
When Jewish and Israeli symbols are turned into props for public “execution,” it does more than offend — it legitimizes hatred, emboldens extremists, and signals that hostility toward Jews and the Jewish state can unfold openly, without consequence.
