A kosher restaurant in central Paris was vandalized on Thursday night with acid for the third time in a year, prompting French authorities to open a hate crime investigation.

Employees at Kokoriko discovered the damage early Friday morning after an unknown individual sprayed acid throughout the premises overnight. The corrosive substance covered tables, walls, and floors. As a result, plates, cutlery, and glassware were destroyed. White residue from the chemical reaction coated several surfaces.

Staff immediately alerted emergency services. In response, the Paris Fire Brigade dispatched its nuclear, radiological, biological, and chemical unit to the scene. In addition, technicians from the Central Laboratory of the Police Prefecture examined the substance to determine its composition.

The prosecutor’s office opened an investigation into damage to property carried out using a means considered dangerous to people, with the act treated as motivated by race, ethnicity, nationality, or religion. Under French law, that charge carries a potential sentence of up to 15 years in prison and a fine of €150,000.

This latest incident followed two prior acid attacks against the same establishment. In October, vandals targeted the restaurant’s exterior. However, authorities closed that investigation after failing to identify those responsible.

For now, the restaurant remains closed. A specialized cleaning company must decontaminate the site before it can reopen. The owners have not issued a public statement.

As French authorities continue their investigation, the incident underscores the persistent threat facing visibly Jewish institutions across Europe.
