A synagogue in Paris’s 19th arrondissement was ransacked during an apparent break-in on Saturday night, as hundreds of thousands of anti-government protesters took to the streets across France, many clashing with police.

It remains unclear whether the incident was connected to the riots.

A leader of the C.H.A.R association (Contre la Haine, l’Antisémitisme, le Racisme) sent JNS a video he said he received Sunday morning from a congregant. The footage shows belongings strewn about, with some cupboard doors missing or hanging from one hinge. The IsraJ news site reported that the rabbi’s office was also ransacked.

One member told the site, “It really looks like an attempted robbery. You can see that whoever did this was probably looking for money. The Torah scrolls were untouched; we simply found the contents of the lockers scattered on the floor.”

Robert Ejnes, executive director of CRIF, the Representative Council of Jewish Institutions of France, told JNS that so far “nothing indicates that this was an antisemitic attack.'”

“It may have been a robbery,” he added. :We remain in high alert, working with police and the authorities.”

A spokesperson for the congregation asked that its name and address be kept private for security reasons.
