The American Muslim & Multifaith Women’s Empowerment Council (AMMWEC) held its annual “Uniting Against Hate” national summit in Washington, D.C., on Monday, bringing together female changemakers from across the United States for a powerful day of inspiration, connection, and action.
AMMWEC is a longstanding partner of the Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM), and CAM was proud to serve as a summit co-sponsor.
CAM Chief Government Affairs Officer Lisa Katz moderated a panel titled “Standing Up to Bigotry: Engaging Local Leaders,” with speakers including President of Muslims Israel Dialogue Sheikh Musa Drammeh and New York City Muslim community leader Dr. Atia Shahnaz, an appointee of Mayor Eric Adams serving as Muslim women liaison in the Mayor’s Community Affairs Unit.
“The AMMWEC annual conference was a powerful reminder of what’s possible when we choose partnership over division,” Katz said. “In the fight against antisemitism, moments like this — where Muslim and Jewish leaders come together with honesty and respect — are not just meaningful, they’re essential. I was honored to take part and to continue building the relationships that make real change possible.”

AMMWEC Founder and President Anila Ali said, “The conference aspires to foster dialogue, share strategies, and build coalitions among those committed to addressing the rising tide of intolerance. By highlighting the voices of women leaders, particularly Muslim women leaders, this initiative aims to cultivate a renewed sense of responsibility within the community, encouraging active participation in civic life, and combating antisemitism and hate while building interfaith solidarity.”

CAM’s collaboration with AMMWEC over the years has included interfaith Iftar celebrations, solidarity rallies, community forums, awareness campaigns, and delegation visits to Israel, among other impactful initiatives.
In November 2023, a month after the October 7th massacre, Ali addressed a crowd of nearly 300,000 people at the “March for Israel” in Washington, D.C., declaring, “I stand before you as a friend of the Jewish people. I am here to affirm to my Abrahamic brothers and sisters that you are not alone.”
