Catalan journalist Pilar Rahola — chair of the Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM) Advisory Board for Latin America — has received a groundswell of support and solidarity from across the globe after Barcelona Hate Crimes Prosecutor’s Office opened a preliminary investigation last week based on a legal complaint filed against her by two anti-Israel activists.
In their complaint, the activists — members of the Socialist Youth Organization of Catalonia (OJS) who previously threw red paint at Rahola at a public conference in 2024 — accused her of “incitement to hatred and complicity with genocide.”
They described Rahola as a “paid collaborator of the Zionist regime” and asserted she was “directly involved in the commission of genocide by the State of Israel against the Palestinian population.” They also claimed she “consciously promotes a hate discourse that dehumanizes the victims and whitewashes the perpetrators of genocide, contributing to the creation of a climate of hostility” toward Palestinians.
CAM en Español came out strongly in Rahola’s defense, saying, “We express our support for Pilar Rahola and reject any attempt to silence voices through violence or the judicialization of debate.”
CAM’s statement rapidly went viral on Instagram, gaining more than 141,000 views, 6,400 likes, and 1,600 comments in just two days.
“Pilar Rahola has always stood with us,” said CAM Executive Director of Latin American Affairs Shay Salamon. “Now we must stand with her.”
“This kind of response reminds us why our voice matters and how important it is to speak clearly when freedom of expression and the fight against antisemitism are at stake,” he added.
