Volunteers from Shomrim London detained a 33-year-old man in Hackney on Monday after three Jewish women were allegedly assaulted in what police were treating as a suspected antisemitic hate crime.

He was arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated common assault. The Metropolitan Police were called to Clapton Common at about 1:40 p.m., following his detention by the volunteers.

Injuries to the women were believed to be minor, the BBC reported. One was allegedly attacked while pushing a baby in a stroller.

The BBC also said he was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm over a separate alleged assault in Islington on Friday.

Chief Inspector Erica Crawshaw called it “an alarming and distressing incident” and thanked Shomrim for acting before police arrived.

“We have increased patrols in the area, and we are speaking to community leaders to provide further reassurance,” Crawshaw said.

“We recognize the concern that this incident will have caused the Jewish community here in Hackney,” she added.
