The United States Coast Guard confirmed on Monday that a swastika was discovered last week at its primary recruit training facility in Cape May, New Jersey.

An instructor spotted the hate symbol on a bathroom wall inside a building at Training Center Cape May on Thursday. Officials removed it immediately and referred the case to the Coast Guard Investigative Service (CGIS) under established policy.

In response, Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Kevin Lunday traveled to Cape May and addressed roughly 900 recruits and staff members. “Anyone who adheres to or advances hate or extremist ideology — get out. Leave. You don’t belong in the United States Coast Guard, and we reject you,” Lunday said in remarks shared by the service.

The Coast Guard confirmed that the CGIS was continuing to investigate the incident. Officials have not released additional details.
