A chant of “Tax the rich” shifted to “Tax the Jews” at a political event in San Francisco, California on Wednesday, prompting a condemnation by Mayor Daniel Lurie.
The incident occurred at a public gathering hosted by Lurie and District Five Supervisor Bilal Mahmood. The event focused on expanding job opportunities and housing in San Francisco as part of an official civic initiative.
In a statement posted on X, Lurie said the rhetoric crossed a clear line. “Suggesting that Jews are wealthy is a tired trope, and targeting our community at an event focused on creating economic opportunity for San Franciscans is decidedly antisemitic,” he wrote.
Lurie added that antisemitism and other forms of hatred had no place in San Francisco and made clear his administration would not tolerate such bigotry.
